In this video I explain why you need theory in the motorsport world. As exciting as it can be to jump into a car and crank it up. . .you really have no idea what you’re doing unless you actually know what you’re doing.
Why You Need Theory – Video Transcript
Hey everybody Matt Covert here again from howtobecomearacecardriver.com and in this video I’m going to talk about why you need theory. And I’m going to start by telling you a little story. I was racing at a place last year and there was a new guy. I like new racers, they’re always fun to hang out with cause they’re always so eager to learn stuff, OK? But this guy, I walked up to him – I like introducing myself to people – I walked up to him and I said hey can I give you a couple tips to get started? You know, I was hoping to ride along with him and show him a couple things or whatever. And he looked at me and he said no that’s OK man, I’m naturally a great driver.
And needless to say this guy was really really slow. And that’s too bad because I really think he enjoyed doing what he was doing. And I think I really could have helped him. But that’s OK. But this guy needed some theory. Because there is a lot of things he just didn’t understand about racecar driving. So we’re going to talk about why you need theory.
Alright, so let’s do this. I’m going to do something that you may not agree with – that you may not have heard of before. I’m going to compare racecar drivers to doctors. So let’s do this.
OK. Doctors are responsible for a whole lot of very complicated things, OK? They have to understand all kinds of ridiculous intricacies. They spend a ton of time practicing and learning all the things they need to know. And eventually they will generate enough competency to do what they do and do it extremely well. How is this any different than racecar driving?
OK. Doctors – they can’t jump in and just do what they do and be amazing at it. They have to go through a ton of learning. There are so many tiny things that all add up to great skill of being a doctor. And it’s the same with racecar driving. A lot of people expect they can just hop in the car and be incredible. And I just don’t think that happens. Racecar driving is a skill that anyone can learn, just like being a doctor. You have to generate competency through time and all this other crazy stuff, OK? So I feel like is the same thing. There’s no such thing as natural talent for just being a Doctor and it’s the same for racecar driving. It is an acquired skill that anyone can learn.
If you don’t understand theory – OK this is why you need theory. Theory generates understanding before you go out and start applying the things that you’re learning. OK? Theory is the first step to general knowledge. Once you understand what you need to do and all the little things that are going to add up to competency in the end, then you can start efficiently -we’re going to go with that- you can efficiently implement that theory.
If you don’t understand the theory there’s no way you’re going to be creating any type of efficient planning or implementation into your life. You just have to understand things before you go and do them or you’re not going to do them very well at all. And these things all lead, eventually, to mastery. And that’s why we trust doctors with our bodies. Because we don’t understand them ourselves so we defer to someone who is – who is capable of understanding what’s going on with us when we’re broken. Same with racecar driving. You have to understand theory before you can be good at anything. And if you’re not good at it you’re never going to develop mastery. So I feel like this is a pretty solid plan to become good at whatever it is you want to do.
So I’m going to leave it just like that, OK? I’m going to put a subscription button up here. Another lifestyle tip here, and I’ll back soon with another video from howtobecomearacecardriver.com.
