The 11,250% Advantage is a guide that details my personal process for landing your own private practice space. This guide shows you how to approach business owners and get them to let you use their commercial parking lots for testing and tuning. The guide includes:

  • Tips to maximize the information in the book
  • Why having extra seat time is so valuable to your racing career and progression as a driver

It’s all about finding a private practice space. Let me teach you:

  • Why having extra seat time is so valuable to your racing career and progression as a driver
  • What kind of commercial property you should be looking
  • Where to begin your search and how you can generate a list of several dozen potential companies that already have motorsport affiliations
  • How to approach the business owner so they have very little reason to turn you down
  • How to maximize your extra seat time and get the biggest return on your practice sessions
  • A few extra thoughts and cautions from my own experiences

My name is Matt Covert. I’m a professional stunt driver for film, television, and live entertainment. I’m also a successful amateur racer and founder of Racers HQ. I started my professional stunt driving career at the Driverseast High-Performance Driving School in Wall, NJ and the International Stunt School in Seattle, WA. I was lucky enough to be trained by stunt industry leaders like:

Mike Burke (Orangle Is The New Black, Gotham, Daredevil, The Blacklist)

Roy Farfel (Blue Bloods, Men In Black 3, Spiderman 3)

Kevin Rogers (House of Cards, Wolf of Wallstreet, Indiana Jones 4)

Steve Buckley (The Dukes of Hazzard TV show, Drugstore Cowboy, Twin Peaks)

Dave Boushey (Highlander, Sudden Death, Dogfight)

The competition at these driving schools was tough. There were a lot of talented people who wanted to make a name for themselves. But I knew that the real competition would begin after the schools had sent us home. And I wanted to give myself the biggest advantage possible. So I made it a priority to obtain a private practice space of my own – a place where I could go and perfect the high-performance driving techniques I had recently learned.

I also knew that having a safe place to implement new techniques would give me a massive advantage over everyone else going into the industry. So I did it. If you want something, you will find a way to make it happen.

It didn’t happen over night, but I was able to work a deal with a local company so I could use their massive parking lot on the weekends for motorsport. And I didn’t stop there. I continued working deals with multiple companies until I had several very helpful sponsorships to help me along the way.

While other entry level drivers were getting rusty, I was out there practicing every single weekend. I was a sponsored high-performance driver with as many private practice sessions as I could handle. Not only was I improving my abilities and level of consistency, but I was able to shoot my first performance driving demo video at my practice location. Within weeks (with some very persistent self-marketing) my demo video landed me my first stunt driving gig on a pilot episode for a show on the History Channel.

Without the demo and without the practice space…it would have taken me much longer to:

  • Break into the industry
  • Prove that I knew what I was doing
  • That I was capable
  • That I was different than everyone else
  • And that I was dedicated and motivated enough to land a private practice space

Since then I’ve had multiple private practice locations in multiple states. And I got them all by using the same framework:

    1. Find the right locations owned by the right type of business.
    2. Reach out the owners of the business.
    3. Work a deal that is more beneficial to the owner than to me.

Here’s the original demo that got me my first stunt driving job. Can you believe all that hair??

Here’s another example of the things you can learn when you have a safe place to play around and experiment with new ideas. Best exhaust note ever?

And here’s one final example where I was able to share a really fun driving experience with a friend.

Can you see the advantages of having a private practice space? Where else can you safely learn new things and perfect them?

Here’s where it starts to get interesting…

As autocrossers, we typically only get 8 minutes of seat time per day. And that’s on a good day. In fact for those racing just once per month…that’s 8 minutes per month. The problem is…

…it’s extremely difficult to improve yourself as a driver when seat time is limited to 8 minutes per month.

So pay attention, because this is where everything comes together. If you used your private practice space two days per month at 7.5 hours per day, you would have…

…an 11,250% advantage over your competition.

Your seat time will skyrocket from 8 minutes per month to 900 minutes. That’s an increase of 11,250%. Every. Single. Month. It means that in two months you’ll have more seat time than a twenty year autocross veteran. Having a private practice is your number one asset for becoming a better racing driver. But if you don’t know how to maximize your practice time, it’s not worth much. A private practice space allows you to A/B test parts, experiment with driving lines, fine tune anti-roll bar settings, and implement new driving techniques.

And with a proper onboard data acquisition system like Harry’s Lap Timer (I’m not affiliated with them, but I promote their product because it’s amazing) you’ll have the PROOF about which settings are best for the car and which techniques let the driver go faster.

Without a practice space, getting this information is almost impossible.

As autocrossers, our seat time is limited to competition runs only. Testing the fringes of your vehicles tunable settings is not ideal during racingIt can only be done effectively with a private practice space. You’ll be able to:
  1. Settle the endless debate about which model is fastest for YOUR car is any condition. Forget forums, word of mouth, what works for other cars, or even what works on same model driven by someone with a different driving style.
  2. You’ll have the absolute proof for your specific vehicle and driving style. And the data will prove it.
  3. Does the 18mm or 20mm anti-roll bar work better for your car? Plug in the parts, record a couple hours of data, and you’ll know for sure.
  4. Are you sure you’re using the perfect tire pressures? How do you know? Have you tested various combinations of pressures in both the front and back?
  5. Did you get a newer model of tire? The optimal pressures may not be the same.
  6. But it doesn’t matter, because you can test and know for SURE.
